Injuries That Occur With an ACL Tear

ACL injuries are not necessarily an isolated problem. Depending on the mechanism of injury, other important structures within the knee may be injured.  The so-called "unhappy triad" is a constellation of knee injuries that includes an ACL tear, an injury to the meniscus, and an injury to the medial collateral ligament. ACL injuries often do not simply occur in isolation. Your doctor will examine you for injuries that may have occurred along with an ACL injury.

Meniscus Injuries 

 What is the Meniscu?

 The meniscus is a ring of cartilage that rests between the thigh and shin bones. The meniscus helps to both cushion and stabilize the joint. When people talk about "cartilage tears," they are usually talking about meniscus tears. On the other hand, when people talk about "wearing away of cartilage," they are usually talking about another type of cartilage that lines the end of the bones. It is the meniscus that tends to be injured along with the ACL.

                                                                                    

Surgical Repair of the Meniscus

 Treatment of a meniscus tear may be performed along with ACL reconstruction surgery. If possible, your surgeon may attempt to repair the meniscus rather than remove the damaged cartilage. Because the repaired meniscus may require different rehabilitation, it is important that patients follow the specific instructions of their surgeon when performing post-operative rehab.

Other Ligament Injures 

  Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)

 The medial collateral ligament is one of the four major stabilizing ligaments of the knee. The ligament spans the inside of the knee and prevents the knee from buckling into a knock-kneed position. MCL injuries usually do not require any surgical treatment, but they may need immobilization. This must be considered when planning the treatment of an ACL injury.

  Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)

 The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) rests just behind the ACL. This large ligament is not injured as often as the ACL, and does not require surgical treatment as often as ACL tear. If an ACL and PCL injury are seen together, your doctor will look for signs of a knee dislocation.
